Couple & Relational Counselling

As a Couples Counsellor;

Julie has an understanding and compassion for the underlying dynamics that may be affecting a current relationship.

She offers an initial diagnostic session with the couple, with no obligation to continue. The purpose of this is transparently to look at what might be occurring  and to assess the probability of outcomes given the motivation of the parties concerned. This is costed at the appropriate rate as it is probably the most important session of all.

The outcome for couples counselling may be quite different for each pair.

For some it is to end the relationship well and remain in good contact to be able to continue being parents to joint offspring or to transform the relationship into a friendship, or simply to say goodbye and thank you.

For others it is to rediscover what it was that originally lead to each falling in love with the other and whether those qualities are still there, despite life's vicissitudes. This could lead to a focus on everyday living and the kind of things that have lead to a sense of not being appreciated, acknowledged or valued. Sounds easy, but it is not, otherwise counselling would not be needed. It is often a process of separating the past from the present.

Couples counselling also involves looking at the relationship as an entity in its own right. It is often helpful for a couple to see the relationship as a coupledom which goes through its own growing phases, with its own needs, just like a person. This helps deflect blame and shame from the individuals involved and enables each party to discover where the coupledom has got stuck and what its needs are.

Testimonials

I work as a General Practioner in Torquay. I have known Julie for 15 years and am grateful for way she has improved the lives of myself, my colleagues and patients alike.

She taught my GP support group the Introduction to transactional analysis course (TA101) and drawing on this the group has grown and developed into an effective way of dealing with the stresses we deal with daily. Julie has been an integral part of this on an ongoing basis providing us with new models and techniques to help each other and our patients.

From a GP practice perspective Julie was instrumental in helping us develop an effective management structure by facilitating a whole team practice away day. She also has helped us better understand the different drivers we have and how communication can be improved by this understanding.

I have direct experience of Julies counselling skills being effective in turning around the lives of colleagues and patients alike.

Julie has a generosity of spirit and unique ability to integrate various models and tools to draw down the skills needed to help the individual, group or organisation achieve its potential and overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of this.
